Secureseal seals contract to protect BP Retail goods in transit

Secureseal has supplied its tamper-proof trailer seals to protect goods being delivered to 365 BP retail outlets under a contract with supply chain management company Exel. Secureseal is a permanent re-usable seal with a unique random security number generator that is designed to record unauthorised door openings. Appointed by BP Retail last year, Exel manage the 24 hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week distribution of chilled and ambient goods to BP forecourts in the UK.

Exel has established a dedicated national distribution centre at Magna Park near Lutterworth to provide warehouse and distribution management services for BP. Secureseal has been fitted to the Exel-operated rigids and articulated trailers. Trailer doors are only opened under supervision with randomly-generated seal numbers recorded at each location. Protection of goods in transit is crucial to BP Retail as its forecourt stores are replenished with fresh food every day.

"Guaranteeing supplies to stores is crucial and Secureseal is part of a whole series of systems that protect that supply. BP Retail wanted a secure system that would not be dependent on the driver and the system using Secureseal is very easy to use and works very well. These mechanical seals are also very robust and since they do not rely on batteries, they are expected to last the lifetime of a vehicle." Says Lee Silvester, Exel¹s Transport Manager.

Secureseal is part of the OEM Group and the trailer seal is the company's mainstream product. The Enfield-based company has also developed a new generation of security and automated monitoring devices using the latest automatic RFID and mobile communications technology.

These include the SecureTemp chilled temperature monitoring system and SecureLocator, a trailer location and management system.

RFID technology keeps pasties cool on route

Samworth Brothers, who own the famous Ginsters Original Cornish Pasty brand, has equipped its distribution vehicles with a revolutionary wireless refrigerated trailer temperature alert developed in conjunction with Secureseal. Samworth Brothers Distribution carries savory foods and the new 'SecureTemp' system incorporates radio frequency technology to wirelessly transmit chilled trailer temperatures to an in-vehicle LED display.

SecureTemp, which has been fitted to 100 Samworth vehicles, alerts the driver if chilled compartment temperatures rise or fall outside the specified range. This could indicate the failure of a refrigerated unit on a trailer. This allows immediate action to be taken before the load is spoilt and enables the load to be replaced where delivery times are critical.

By monitoring and protecting chilled goods, SecureTemp will help Samworth Brothers Distribution fulfill due diligence obligations and reduce the cost of spoiled loads and lost orders. The use of wireless RFID technology provides cost-free communication and eliminates the need for cable connection between cab and trailer. The in-cab unit has a LED display showing compartment temperature and has an added audible facility.

" SecureTemp is assisting us with the strict legislative guidelines that surround temperature controlled distribution as well as helping us reduce costs by saving loads before they are spoiled" says Carl Bufton, Distribution Manager of Samworth Brothers Distribution.

Secureseal, who are part of the OEM Group, are also working on enhancements to the system that will provide added benefits.
SecureTemp can be extended so that trailer ID and current temperatures are transmitted directly to the transport office. Operators can see not only which trailers are onsite, but also the current temperature of each trailer. This immediately identifies which trailer is ready for loading; a very useful management tool for improving operational efficiency and speed.

Secureseal's SecureTemp keeps it cool in the yard

Secureseal has developed a wireless temperature monitoring system for refrigerated trailers in transport yards and critical points within the site The ID's and temperatures of trailers parked up or being chilled for loading are transmitted to the transport office using specially-developed low power radio frequency technology.
This wireless transmission eliminates the need for walk-arounds to check temperature status of each trailer.

The system is an enhancement to
SecureTemp, the in-cab trailer alert system that provides wireless connection to RFID temperature sensors in chilled compartments. SecureTemp helps chilled fleet operators fulfil their due diligence obligations as well as reducing the cost of spoiled loads and lost orders.

The radio frequency transmitters with a range of up to 200 metres offer a five-year battery life. Linked to PCs in the transport office or warehouse, the system provides data automatically giving staff an instant check on which trailers are in the yard, which are being chilled and at what temperature. The system also monitors during loading and on departure to ensure compliance and load protection at anytime the trailer is on site.

When on the road, SecureTemp alerts the driver if the refrigerated unit on a trailer fails, allowing remedial action to be taken before a load is spoilt. The unique 'Search and Mate' system has a long-life battery powered RFID temperature transmitter fitted inside the trailer and an in-cab receiver with an audible and visual LED display.

Secureseal is part of the OEM Group and
SecureTemp is one of a new generation of security and automated monitoring devices designed for transport operators. SecureTemp's key feature is that it is wireless and does not require a cable connection from trailer to cab. Now with the option of SecureTemp in the yard, operators can gain added benefit of always-on monitoring for all trailers, whether coupled or not. SecureTemp also benefits from a wide temperature band capacity and is simple to install, easy to use and is a maintenance free unit.

Secureseal keeps a tag on trailer assets

Secureseal has launched an innovative system to manage trailer assets and prevent the theft of goods in transit. The intelligent system transmits trailer door seal information automatically before a vehicle passes a gatehouse, with status sent to a gatehouse PC or any remote PC via the web. Called Secureseal System, it boosts the appeal of Secureseal's already popular mechatronic trailer seal, which provides a random number generator to prevent unauthorised door openings.

Secureseal System uses radio frequency transmitters with a range of up to 300 metres and eight-year battery life. Linked to software at the gatehouse, the system provides data automatically as the trailer passes through the gate. This information includes the trailer identification number, the security seal number, the condition of the seal either open or closed, together with the date and time the trailer arrived and departed from the Depot.

Trailer security and utilisation is a major issue with operators across all industry sectors. First developed by Secureseal for the major high street grocery retailers, Secureseal offers a highly cost effective solution to load tampering, theft and vehicle management and can be fitted to roller shutter and standard back doors of curtainsiders, box vans, rigids and other specialist trailers.

With data recorded automatically, operators can build up a picture of the use of their trailers, very efficiently, over time. It measures the time taken for trailers to go from depot to depot, which enhances the security of the trailer in transit and uses short-range radio signal to remove expensive communication costs between the trailer and the gatehouse. A full range of Management Reports is available within the software suite, to help make operational decisions.

"Secureseal System provides real intelligence to enhance trailer security and management. It is completely automatic, taking out any manual recording of seal numbers and trailer location, adding security and of course saving a lot of time. Already trialled successfully by Secureseal customers, it should provide real benefits to transport operators" says Secureseal Systems Managing Director Ben Grant.

Christian Salvesen contract Secureseal for new generation RFID trailer location system

Secureseal has won a major contract with Christian Salvesen for a new type of automatic trailer location system. In what is thought to be the biggest order of its type in the UK, special radio frequency tags will be fitted to 1500 Christian Salvesen trailers with a detection network extending nationally across 45 sites.

The ground-breaking system uses the new RFID tagging technology linked to GPRS communications. Designed as a straightforward 'site location' solution, the system eliminates the need for costly units and infrastructure. It is reckoned to cost 75% less than conventional trailer tracking systems.

"We have a shared pool of 1500 trailers operating across more than 45 sites and the Secureseal system will tell us where our trailers are. The system is exactly what we need and offers the added benefit of low installation and operating costs. This will ensure a quick payback and it makes very good economic sense" says Simon Woodward, Business Support Manager at Christian Salvesen.

The RFID tags being fitted to Christian Salvesen trailers are 5-year battery powered RFID transmitters. These transmit trailer ID wirelessly to a cellular GPRS hub that then updates a secure web server. It is a simple plug-in system needing no special installation. Christian Salvesen will be able to get each of the 45 sites, many of which are customer-owned, up and running literally in minutes.

Currently Christian Salvesen undertake daily trailer audits at all sites that are time consuming and can be prone to errors. It also carries out quarterly censuses to double-check trailer locations, but with this new system in place these tasks will no longer be necessary.

"This innovative Secureseal location system gives us real control over the trailer fleet. We intend to use the information from the new system to increase our efficiency through better management of our trailer pool. The accurate, up to date information will also assist with maintenance and service scheduling and ease the task of ensuring we are always working safely and legally" says Woodward.

The system includes easy PC software for monitoring trailer activity with search by depot and trailer, time analysis with departure and arrival times, MOT/maintenance alerts and other reports that form part of a complete trailer management solution.

Developers of the system Secureseal are part of the OEM Group and the trailer location system is one of a new generation of security and automated monitoring devices for fleet operators.

Secureseal system for DTS protects garment deliveries

DTS Logistics, the leading pre-retail and fashion logistics service provider, has equipped its vehicles with an advanced radio frequency security system from Secureseal. Designed to safeguard goods in transit and giving integrity of the load to DTS customers, the Secureseal ŒSystem¹ also assists in the management of DTS vehicles. The system transmits trailer door seal information automatically before a vehicle passes a gatehouse, with status sent to PCs in DTS gatehouses or via the web.

The company¹s fleet is already equipped with Secureseal, the tamper-proof mechatronic trailer seal which provides a random number generator to prevent unauthorised door openings. This required manual recording of seal numbers on seal audit trail sheets at DTS depots and customer sites. The new system automatically records data with RFID technology linked to the Internet, providing DTS with added electronic security and convenience.

DTS Logistics run a fleet of 160 vehicles operating from eight sites across the UK. The company provides a wide range of pre-retail services including ticketing, pressing, quality control, home shopping and fulfilment for many high street retailers. DTS Logistics is a major subsidiary of the £70m Clipper Group, which is now moving over 150 million garments a year.

"Secureseal System is an important development for us as it gives us key information such as seal condition as a vehicle approaches the gatehouse. It also transmits sequential numbers showing door openings and we can compare this with the number of scheduled drops. It is part a series of security measures that give assurance to our customers that their goods are safeguarded on route" says Paul Bentley, Clipper Group Security Manager. Secureseal System uses radio frequency transmitters with a range of up to 300 metres and eight-year battery life. The system provides data automatically as the trailer passes through the gate. This includes the trailer identification number, the security seal number, the condition of the seal either open or closed, together with the date and time the trailer arrived and departed from the depot.

"RF data transmitted from the seals by Secureseal System verifies that everything is in order during transport to customers. We can compare the Secureseal data with other information such as track and trace so we can match times, door openings and location, giving us a clear picture and 24 hour protection. Armed with this level of intelligence, it not only adds up to a serious deterrent against theft, but also gives us very useful information for managing our transport operations" explains Bentley.

Secureseal combines the best features of electronic data capture with mechanical security to provide an easy to install, reliable, value-for-money and high quality solutions to load tempering and trailer theft.

Increasingly, Secureseal products are becoming the seal of choice among major European supermarket groups including Carrefour, Casino, Ahold Group and La Poste. The cost effectiveness of the Secureseal trailer seal coupled with its reliability in operation is developing its sales in Europe. These are just two of several features that have built its reputation among UK supermarkets and distribution companies since its launch five years ago.

To help build sales further in Europe, OEM has appointed a new distributor in Germany, France and Hungary. OEM has also appointed David Coote to develop and look after the growing European customer base. David has extensive experience of selling trailer seals to the export market within Europe and significantly strengthens the OEM salesforce.

"We see major opportunities for Secureseal in Europe among retailers, European postal organisations and major haulage and distribution companies. Trailer theft and tampering is a major issue in continental Europe and companies are looking for a maintenance free cost effective solution," commented Ben Grant managing director of the OEM Group.

Secureseal keeps a close eye on Transport Operators' trailer assets
Commercial Vehicle security specialist OEM Group has developed the first simple, cost effective and reliable web-based trailer management and security system that significantly reduces the possibility of operators 'losing trailers' in their depots or at customers' premises.

Called Secureseal System, it builds on the success of the Secureseal's traditional 'mechatronic' established trailer seal. It provides a robust random number generator but now has an additional transmitter and web-based connection enabling accurate information to be stored. This includes data about the condition of the trailer security, thus reducing the time in checking the vehicle at designated security points and removing the expensive communication costs associated with other types of tracking devices.

Secureseal Systems managing director Ben Grant goes to some length to explain that the new system is not a tracking device but an asset management tool that helps operators to keep track of their trailer fleet. "Even if an operator has satellite tracking, once the tractor unit is detached from the trailer, the trailer becomes invisible. Even if a tracking device is fitted to the trailer often the lack of a suitable power source prevents it being effective."

The system uses 433 Mhz radio frequency transmitters with an operational range of 50 metres, and an eight-year battery life linked to software at the gatehouse, the new Secureseal System provides data automatically as the trailer passes through the gate. This information includes the trailer identification number which links the trailer to the seal, the security seal number, the condition of the seal either open or closed and the date and time the trailer passed the gatehouse. An additional special tag recorder on the trailer helps to identify whether the trailer is entering or leaving the depot.

As the data is recorded automatically the operator can build up a picture of the use of the trailers, very efficiently, over time. It measures the time taken for trailers to go from depot to depot, which enhances the security of the trailer in transit and uses short-range radio to remove expensive communication costs between the trailer and the gatehouse.

Secureseal is trialing the system with a limited number of operators over an eight-week period in January-March 2004 to test out the new system in 'live' operations. The development of the new system has come from a need identified among its customers in the UK who have all experienced 'losing trailers'. With trailer rental costs in excess of £100 per week, Secureseal's system has a very fast payback.

To give operators complete flexibility Secureseal Systems will be offered on a lease or purchase basis. "This is a small price to pay to protect an operators prized assets," added Ben Grant. "With asset utilisation becoming increasingly important with the advent of the Working Time Directive and just in time distribution operations a cost effective asset management tool is essential."

Trailer security and utilisation is a major issue with operators across all industry sectors. All Secureseal products have been developed in partnership with customers and fully tested in operational situations in advance of their launch to make sure they meet the requirements of operators.

United Kingdom-Based OEM Group Introduces Secureseal to North American Transportation Market
ENFIELD, ENGLAND - November 19, 2001 - OEM Group Ltd., a leading provider of security devices to the European transportation industry, today announced the introduction of its highly successful and innovative Secureseal and Secureseal.Data™ to the North American transportation marketplace. The world's first mechanical reusable seal incorporating a random number generator, Secureseal was introduced in the United Kingdom in 1997. The recently developed Secureseal.Data couples the fail-safe security of Secureseal 's random number mechanical system with radio transmitted vehicle data. To date, over 10,000 vehicles are equipped with the system.

Using a unique random number mechanism developed with gaming (slot) machine technology,
Secureseal generates a new set of random numbers when the seal is closed. Once a trailer is loaded and the Secureseal is locked it will generate a set of numbers. These numbers are recorded on a delivery manifest. Upon delivery, if the numbers do not match what is on the manifest then it is evident the trailer door was opened and the delivery is no longer considered safe or secure.

Secureseal.Data offers an interface to most vehicle management and tracking systems via a low-power wireless telemetry link. Using time, date and location stamping, an exact record of when and where a trailer door was opened will be stored when the numbers change. In addition, when integrated with real-time communication devices, dispatch and/or authorities can be alerted in the event of unauthorized trailer door movement.

Traditionally, security seals have fallen into two main groups - indicative seals and barrier seals. An indicative seal is designed to be easily broken. Manufactured from paper, plastic or adhesive tape, it is designed to make an enclosure tamper evident so that unauthorized entry can be detected. A barrier seal provides a physical barrier, such as a steel cable or a bar that requires a tool for removal. Both are disposable and must be destroyed in order to gain entry. Secureseal is a one-time purchase permanently mounted to the trailer that can be an indicative or barrier seal depending upon the needs of the customer.

Although electrical devices have recently been introduced to the market,
Secureseal's basic mechanical design offers the reliability of withstanding the demanding trucking environment that most electronic devices fail to take into account. In addition, tampering with electronic systems can be done electronically with no detection, whereas mechanical devices always show physical evidence of tampering.

"The use of disposable seals has not kept pace with the technological advancements within the transportation industry," stated Cameron Grant, managing director for the OEM Group. "Plastic moldings or formed metal strips are simply not offering the levels of security or information feedback that is now demanded. By listening to our customers concerns we have developed a product which is solving the issues of security, administration and cost on all fleet sizes worldwide."
